About us | He kupu mō mātou

Our On Farm Assets team plays a critical role in supporting our farmer shareholders by maintaining the infrastructure and equipment essential to collecting and protecting one of New Zealand's most valuable products. From preventative maintenance and asset upgrades through to digital asset monitoring and compliance, the team helps ensure our on-farm operations are safe, reliable and future-ready.

About the Opportunity | Mō tēnei tūranga
At Fonterra, we're committed to supporting our farmer shareholders with reliable, safe and efficient on-farm infrastructure. We're looking for a hands-on, practical and customer-focused On Farm Asset Technician to join our team and help keep critical dairy assets operating at their best.

Based in Darfield, and servicing the wider Canterbury region, you'll spend your days working directly with farmers installing, maintaining, repairing and replacing Fonterra-owned on-farm assets. This is a highly autonomous role that combines technical work, problem solving and stakeholder engagement.

Working closely with farmers, milk quality teams and internal stakeholders, you'll play an important role in ensuring our on-farm assets remain compliant, well-maintained and ready to support milk collection operations.

Key responsibilities include:

Installing, maintaining, repairing, and removing milk vats and associated on-farm assets
Conducting preventative maintenance activities to maximise asset performance and reliability
Managing asset information through SAP and handheld digital devices, ensuring records are accurate and up to date
Diagnosing issues and providing practical technical advice and support to farmer shareholders
Supporting milk collection compliance requirements and asset inspections
Contributing to capital upgrade programmes, including vat replacements and chilling upgrades
Building strong relationships with farmers and delivering a high level of customer service
Responding to asset-related issues and escalating concerns where appropriate
Working safely and ensuring compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards

This role offers extensive training and development including Working at Heights, Confined Spaces, Hiab operation, asset maintenance and specialist on-farm systems.

The position is based out of our Darfield site, with regular travel throughout Canterbury and occasional travel further afield. Standard hours are Monday to Friday, starting at 7:00am, with occasional on-call support required for urgent situations.

About You | Mōu

You're someone who enjoys a mix of hands-on technical work, customer interaction and problem solving. You take pride in delivering a quality service, can work independently and build trusted relationships with a wide range of people.

You may come from a mechanical, maintenance, transport, agricultural, trades or industrial background and enjoy finding practical solutions in the field. Just as importantly, you're comfortable using technology and can confidently work with digital systems, asset data and mobile applications.

To be successful, you'll bring:

Strong relationship-building and communication skills
A practical mechanical aptitude and interest in maintenance and asset care
Confidence using technology, including mobile devices, digital work management tools, and Microsoft Office
The ability to learn and utilise systems such as SAP
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage your own workload
A proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement
A commitment to health, safety, and quality standards
A current full New Zealand driver's licence (Class 4 beneficial but not essential)

Experience within the dairy, agricultural, transport, engineering, manufacturing or maintenance sectors would be advantageous but we're equally interested in people who have the right attitude, customer focus and willingness to learn.

Join a close-knit team of technical specialists who combine practical expertise, modern technology and strong farmer relationships to keep critical on-farm assets running at their best. This unique role offers a great mix of hands-on technical work, customer engagement and asset management with plenty of variety, autonomy and the opportunity to make a tangible difference for our farmer shareholders every day. Alongside a supportive team culture you'll benefit from ongoing training and development, exposure to innovative technology and the chance to work across some of New Zealand's most iconic farming regions.
