Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team

The School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) is a part of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. We are the only Optometry school in New Zealand, and one of eight schools in Australasia with accreditation from the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand which enables graduates to practice optometry in New Zealand and in Australia. The University operates a full scope optometry clinic with a large and diverse patient base at its Grafton campus as well as external clinics at other sites throughout Auckland. SOVS’ research covers a range of themes including paediatric optometry, myopia, age-related eye disease, community eye health, bioengineering, imaging of eye and brain, and visual neuroscience.

Job Description

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
This vacancy is for a permanent full-time (1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday) Lecturer to teach into the Bachelor of Optometry and related postgraduate courses delivered by the school and undertake research in clinical optometry and vision science areas. As a Lecturer you will teach undergraduate students at all levels of the degree and support wider activities in the school and University. This role is based at the Grafton campus. The salary range is $94,981 - $110,379, dependent on skills and experience. For more detailed information, please refer to the Position Description.

Qualifications

He kōrero mōu | About you

You will hold a PhD in Optometry or a related discipline by the commencement of employment, and have a track record of research productivity evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals (essential) and through successful application for competitive research funding (desirable).

You will also hold an optometry qualification which EITHER is recognised for registration as an Optometrist with therapeutic competencies in New Zealand (desirable), OR which can be recognised for registration through the relevant examination processes delivered by the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand (essential). In the latter case, the successful applicant will be expected to pursue recognition and registration as an optometrist in New Zealand in order to fulfil requirements of the role on an ongoing basis.

Ideally you will have experience in clinical specialties, particularly those associated with anterior and/or posterior ocular pathology and ocular therapeutics, and/or refractive development and management and/or imaging of the eye and associated structures.

You will have experience in facilitating student learning, assessing students’ work and evaluating course content and delivery, and be passionate about teaching and supporting students to succeed.
