The Opportunity

As a key contributor to our Operations team based in Wellington, the Process Engineer, reporting to the Regional Lead, is responsible for ensuring optimal operation and performance of waste water and thermal dryer systems across Veolia's New Zealand facilities. This hands-on role focuses on day-to-day process monitoring, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement to meet contractual obligations and regulatory requirements.

 

Key responsibilities include conducting regular process audits, analysing operational data, and implementing adjustments to maximise efficiency and compliance. In this role you will work closely with plant Treatment Supervisors and respond promptly to complex operational issues, providing technical expertise to resolve problems and minimise disruptions.

 

The role involves supporting the updating of standard operating procedures, and conducting operator training to enhance plant performance. Supporting the process compliance function is a crucial aspect of the position and includes  monitoring effluent quality, preparing compliance reports, and liaising with regulatory authorities when necessary.

What you'll need to be successful

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Water / Chemical engineering degree and/or relevant tertiary qualification
  • Demonstrable experience in electrical and instrumentation systems (including PLC/SCADA) / related asset management and/or project delivery; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum (5+) years experience in water/wastewater treatment operations
  • Proven ability to manage a project and deliver within time and budget constraints.
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain working relationships with colleagues.
  • Ability to understand business and legal models.
  • Experience in process investigation, optimisation and design for water and / or wastewater systems.

 

Other relevant requirements

  • Knowledge of New Zealand markets and products, specifically in relation to water and wastewater treatment and reticulation infrastructure.
  • Understanding of the commercial nature of the operations of Veolia and ability to organise resources, establish priorities and meet deadlines through balancing commitments and priorities so as to deliver capital projects on time and within budget.
  • Conversant with QA systems such as ISO9001 and ISO14001 and contract documentation such as NZS3916:2013 and NZS3915:2005 Conditions of Contract.
  • Conversant with project management and drawing tools like MS Project, MS Visio or similar.
  • Strong literacy, numeracy, computing, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with clients and contractors.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team with an aptitude for both office and field work.
  • Motivation and enthusiasm, a keen eye for detail and a desire for excellent customer service.
  • Current driver's license


This role requires a practical approach, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic operational environment. You will play a vital role in maintaining Veolia's reputation for reliable and efficient water and wastewater services across New Zealand.

 

You are able to demonstrate the ability to assess and assimilate a wide range of information and consolidate a position or assessment effectively. With sound analytical and problem solving skills, you are persistence and confident in your own judgement and capability.

 

You are a self starter with an ability to work with a high degree of autonomy and personal integrity. As well as the ability to quickly adapt to changing circumstances, you have strong analytical skills with a  focus on quality of work, are cost-conscious and a results focussed team player. You are a confident and effective communicator with the ability to build strong relationships and interact at all levels of organisations (including corporate and large public sector organisations) and you bring a high level of commercial acumen and strategic thinking abilities.
