Gardener
Auckland Zoo is recognised as one of the most progressive zoos in the world. A winner of national and international environmental-related awards, it is home to 126 different species and over 1,000 animals.
As a Gardener at Auckland Zoo, you'll be an integral member of the Horticulture team, responsible for maintaining the planted landscapes within the zoo, including animal exhibits and public areas.
Your role will involve:
- Ensure that gardens, shrubbery, trees, and lawns are healthy, well-maintained, and beautiful. This includes managing irrigation, pest control, and general plant care.
- Maintain all gardening equipment and machinery to a high standard.
- Play an active role in planning and implementing horticultural development projects within the zoo.
This is a fixed term contract to work on a project as we are developing a new area.
Start date approx. end November 2024 to August 2025
You will work on a roster basis, with some weekends and public holidays included.
He kōrero mōu: About you
You will have a keen interest in gardening and knowledge of indigenous and exotic flora.
- A solid understanding of plant identification, pest management, and general plant care.
- 3 to 4 years of hands-on horticulture, landscaping, or botanical experience.
- This is an active outdoors role so physical fitness and good health is essential along with the ability to follow instructions, work within a small team and have exemplary customer service skills.
Qualifications preferred:
- A full manual driver's license
- A relevant qualification in horticulture or botany (or relevant experience)
- An HT licence and spray applicators qualification

The salary for this role is $27.80 per hour ($57,824k per annum, pro rata)
