He angitutanga: The opportunity

We have fantastic opportunities for Principal and Senior Strategists to join our Natural Environment Strategy (NES) team.

Provide high quality and influential strategic advice to internal and external decision-makers across environmental domains.

Use your strategy and policy skills and environmental knowledge across a wide breadth of topics.

Our policy work is diverse, from dealing with central government direction and what it means for Auckland, through to improving and developing effective strategies for the natural environment. To achieve our goals, as set out in the Auckland Plan 2050, we work alongside elected members, senior leaders, council-controlled organisations, through to planning and regulatory consents and operational kaimahi out in the field.

Key work areas that you will lead and contribute to include:

  • determining how we manage our natural environment over the longer term and how to get there in an integrated way
  • promoting resilience to natural hazards through improved recognition of natural environmental values within council’s planning, regulatory and operational programmes
  • spatial representation of natural environmental issues and nature-based solutions (for example, blue green network or catchment value mapping using geospatial tools)

Both the Principal and Senior team members will either lead or contribute to the team’s work programme.  In addition, the Principal role provides you with the opportunity to support other team members and the team’s manager, and help nurture a team culture that embraces our diversity and wellbeing, with shared values and purpose.

He korero mou: About you

We are looking for someone who can lead or significantly influence Auckland Council policy programmes so that they align with organisational strategic outcomes.

Your experience has enabled you to have a robust understanding of how strategy and policy play a key role in achieving an environmental outcome or direction, where multiple strategic or operational drivers make integration a challenge.  Relevant experience in certain technical disciplines (policy development, environmental frameworks, strategic thinking) will assist you in making traction through a diverse range of environmental issues.

Naturally an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills, you can think on your feet and positively interact with and influence a varied audience.

We will also value the following:

  • the ability to produce quality reports, other collateral and strategic analysis
  • a well-developed understanding of the workings and functions of local and / or central government
  • geospatial experience and a practical understanding and use of geospatial tools (including geospatial or graphics skillset)

Nga ahuatanga kei a matou: What we offer

Being part of our NES team will be great for your career, as our work has significant influence on positive environmental outcomes for Auckland. In addition to our employee benefits, we work flexibly and provide opportunities for professional development and career progression.
