Job Description
Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
We’re seeking an Animal Cage Wash Technician internally called Technical Assistant to join our busy research unit at our leading Faculty of Medical & Health Science, where ground-breaking research is carried out every day.
This is a hands-on opportunity to play a critical role in supporting some of the University’s world-leading research, where you will directly contribute to bettering the lives of people in New Zealand and around the world.
The purpose of this position is to provide general support to researchers, students and VJU colleagues through the provision of a constant supply of clean, hygienic, serviceable caging, and currently process approx. 4000 cages weekly. This whilst ensuring that consumables are retrieved from the loading dock and taken to the area of use or storage, as well as the removal of waste generated from within the VJU through the correct University waste streams. This role plays an important part in assisting the maintenance of animal welfare in the VJU.
The salary range for this role is $50,700 - $59,700 per annum depending on experience and qualifications.
This is a full time, 37.5 hours per week, fixed term role.

Our ideal candidate
- Daily operation & maintenance of the equipment:
- i.e. cage washer, autoclaves, sanitizing equipment, and bedding dispenser.
- Emptying and cleaning animal cages (small and large caging).
- Process clean cages and water bottles.
- Maintaining a clean and orderly working environment throughout the relevant area of the facility:
- i.e. floors, sinks, and other areas.
- Waste removal from the facility.
- Collection & transportation of goods or large equipment within the university.
- Laundry duties.
- Excellent communication skills are a must, as you will be required to work both independently and seamlessly as part of a busy team.
- Perform additional duties as required by supervisor/manager/department.
- Physically fit due to the requirements of the role.
- Previous experience in a similar role is not essential as full training will be given but is an advantageous.
If you have experience working in a cattery, kennels, or have some farm assistant experience which includes cleaning animal cages this could be a good fit for you.
