The role
The Surface Geosciences Department comprises world-leading scientists and technicians who have expertise in palaeontology, geological mapping, stratigraphy, climate change and sea level rise, hydrogeology, environmental chemistry, landscape evolution and Antarctic geology.
This senior leadership role places you as a pivotal member of the Science and Commercial Leadership Team, who collaboratively manage an ambitious work programme and together ensure the timely delivery of high-quality research and commercial projects. You will be responsible for the performance of programmes, projects, and budgets and play an important role in achieving organisational outcomes through GNS Science’s four research themes. You will also be responsible for all aspects of people leadership for the department.
About you
You are an experienced senior leader with a technical scientific background and at least 15 years’ experience in a science or related field. Your strong leadership skills enable you to inspire teams, manage change, and deliver results in a collaborative setting.
You bring well-developed knowledge of earth sciences and a deep understanding of New Zealand’s science and technology sector. Your ability to manage complex projects, drive innovation, and develop relationships with diverse stakeholders will set you apart.
With a postgraduate qualification in a relevant scientific discipline, you possess the critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills needed to thrive in this role.

This is a permanent, full time (38 hours per week) role. This role would preferably be based at our campus in Avalon, Lower Hutt, but we will also consider candidates who wish to be based at our Wairakei campus in Taupō. Given our current changing environment we are also open to contractor options.
