Te Tākinatanga | Our Story
At Te Mata Hiko (Contact Energy), we believe home is the most important place in the world. It's all part of our vision to leave Aotearoa better than we found it. We’re a power, mobile and broadband company, but we’re so much more than that. We are transforming the ways we mahi, and how Aotearoa is powered, leading the charge on renewable energy and digitising customer journeys in ways not yet seen here. A team of 1000+ from all walks of life who love what we do, look out for each other, and learn from one another every day, we’re stoked to be guided by our tikanga: we touch lives to make life better.
Our Trading function is responsible for optimising Contact's energy portfolio. They make sure we get the best possible returns on the electricity and gas we buy and sell. With one of our standout Energy Analysts moving onto a new role in Forward Markets , we have space now for a new Energy Analyst to join our Spot Markets team and help steer the short to medium-term strategy of our electricity and gas portfolios.
Job Description
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role
Energy is a deeply complex sector and you’ll be right in the heart of it, part of a humming team of four (great, supportive humans) who play a vital part in Contact’s financial performance. Reporting to our Spot Market Manager, as an Energy Analyst you’ll focus on portfolio planning (how we’re going to use fuel, assets etc over the next year or so), adjust strategy to meet shorter term needs, offer real-time support to our Dispatch Trading team, oversee gas transport arrangements, and effectively plan for and manage contingency issues such as disruptions to transmission. You’ll play a key role in developing Contact’s commercial operations strategy, here and now and in the future.
Your focus day-to-day will be less about building tools; more about collecting information from the tools. You’ll use data to tell a story, advise strategies, and communicate them to our management teams. This role sits in the Spot Markets team, but you will also support the wider trading group: Forward Markets, Dispatch Trading, Fuels, Transmission and Data Management. It’s the perfect opportunity to work collaboratively and understand the Contact Energy business from the ground up.
Note that there is an on-call component in this job which requires you to be on-call one week in every 4 weeks.
Qualifications
Ko wai koe | About you
Lateral thinking is the #1 skill we’re looking for; someone who can ingest a lot of information from lots of different sources and turn it into a cohesive strategy. Tertiary-qualified in Finance, Maths, Engineering, Economics, or a related field, you’re great with numbers, have worked under pressure before and “get it”. With plenty of mahi under your belt identifying opportunities within complex markets, producing high quality analysis, and formulating operational strategies, you thrive in fast-paced multi-faceted environments and have strong commercial acumen and communication skills that ensure your voice is heard. Analytical by nature, you can decipher complex information and convey it with ease to a diverse audience, including those of us who are not technically minded.
It would be great if you’re proficient in modern programming languages like R-Studio, SQL or Python, but not essential. What we need more than anything is commercial nous, comfort making fast (good) decisions, and the capability to understand and communicate complex issues with ease.
Human centric in the way you mahi, you have great people and communication skills but are a critical thinker, not a people pleaser – you can influence with ease, but also deliver hard messages when they need to be heard. Above all, you’re a team player, open and willing to learn, with a high degree of energy and integrity.
Additional Information
The Spot Markets team are mostly based in Wellington and it would be great if you are too, however the role can be based elsewhere and we’re open to applications from all over Aotearoa.
Contact is not a place you’ll stagnate. We are growing and offer superb learning and development opportunities along with a bunch of other perks like free health insurance cover, access to Contact Shares, a ‘Good to be Home’ annual payment toward your home set up & wellbeing, a trail-blazing parental leave policy, discounts on Contact Energy products, and more.
This ad will close automatically on Saturday 12 April but we're considering applications as they come in so hop to it if you're keen, or if there's something you’re curious to know first, reach out to Tash on [email protected].
Please note, only candidates with the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered for this role.
Research shows that while men apply to jobs where they meet 60% of the criteria, women and those in underrepresented groups tend to only apply if they tick every box. We're not about box ticking, so if you think you have what it takes but don't meet everything stated above, please still get in touch. We'd love to kōrero.
