Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
This is your unique opportunity to make a significant impact by supporting a team of brilliant environmental planners to deliver great transport outcomes. You will be crucial in leading and contributing to the acceleration of continuous improvement within the team and across NZTA.
You will maintain the Environmental Planning Team within Transport Services as a high-performing ‘Centre of Excellence’ function, including managing Waka Kotahi involvement in RMA (or equivalent) statutory planning processes, other environmental approvals, and the Government Roading Powers Act limited access road functions. You also act as the Business Owner of the CS-Vue compliance database. In addition, you will:
- Lead and contribute to accelerating a significant work programme of continuous improvement initiatives including in relation to environmental planning for capital projects, increase efficiency of the LUDs programme and replacement of the existing CS-Vue compliance database.
- Understand and align with our business operations and the importance of delivery.
- Foster strong environmental planning within the team and across the organisation.
- Influence and connect with key stakeholders throughout the business.
- Set up opportunities to collaborate with technical experts.
This role is also a crucial member of the Planning, Performance & Safety (PPS) Leadership Team. You will contribute actively to leadership across PPS, enhancing the connection and collaboration across PPS and System Design.

We are seeking to appoint at a salary between $186,264 - $248,352 commensurate to skills and experience.

We are looking for an individual with demonstrated people leadership, including experience in leading high-performing teams of professionals and designing, shaping, and leading enterprise change. The ideal candidate will be highly experienced in developing and implementing career pathways and professional development programmes with a proven track record of growing and developing team members. Additionally, we are looking for:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strategic thinker who can grasp complex information, distil it and communicate it simply to a range of stakeholders.
- You will be well-connected and influential across the business.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong relationships across external stakeholders, including government departments, regulators and professional services organisations.
- An understanding of New Zealand land transport and environmental legislation relevant to Waka Kotahi functions.
- A robust understanding of our business operations and the importance of delivery.
- Proven experience in leading a “shared resource/service” function.
- Experienced leader who is experienced working within and contributing to a high performing multi-disciplinary leadership team.
An understanding of environmental planning and its role in transport infrastructure projects and transport network operation.
