Job Description

NPDL’s Ship Management Team is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable and compliant operation of our fleet of container, general cargo and other managed vessels operating primarily in the Asia Pacific region, including New Zealand and Australia. We strive to continuously improve our ship management activities, with an overarching goal of being a “best in class” ship manager. Working in a complex, ever-changing environment we work hard to stay ahead of the pack.

To help us achieve this, we are looking for a Technical Superintendent to ensure that NPDL vessels are managed in a safe, cost-effective manner, maximizing their availability for use by the business. You will do this in two ways: by ensuring the vessels are always fit for purpose, able to satisfy the business requirements in terms of reliability, carrying capacity and cost efficiency, while in full compliance with all required regulations.   As well as minimizing the vessels’ downtime and unplanned maintenance, ensuring a proactive preventative maintenance plan is in place that fully aligns with agreed vessel schedules and business priorities. paced environment.

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Provide innovative and practical solutions to complex ship management problems
  • Manage and oversee the day-to-day, safe, effective technical operation of assigned vessels
  • Prepare and implement budgets and operational plans for all shipboard repairs and maintenance activities
  • Formulate and manage vessel daily running cost and report on budget performance
  • Monitor and report on vessel performance, ensuring that work carried out on vessels is executed to a high standard
  • Actively seek out opportunities to improve technical management of the fleet
  • Promote best-practice work onboard all vessels, championing and ensuring the company ship maintenance and management system is fully optimized
  • Identify potential improvement opportunities that arise from developments in technology, and routinely report on these
  • International travel is a critical part for this role where you may need to leave at short notice to conduct inspections or investigations.
  • Ensure that vessel complies with all reporting requirements including daily, weekly and Monthly Reports, review them and consistently provide feedback to vessel for proper and quality reports
  • Monitor Defect List from Vessels on a weekly basis and plan rectification together with ship’s crew
  • Analyse the existing process and reporting and provide valuable inputs for improvement and standardization of processes

Qualifications

Here’s what you’ll bring to the table:

  • Marine experience in a merchant-marine environment (Chief Engineer or above) on container vessels. Preferably experience in a shore-based ship management position.
  • Experience as Technical superintendent for Container/ dry cargo/ tanker vessels.
  • Unwavering commitment to safety in ship management
  • An excellent understanding of the requirements of modern ship management
  • A deep understand of international, regional and national marine regulatory frameworks
  • A strong understanding of technology, and the way in which this can be applied to ship management
  • A demonstrable commitment to 100% compliance
  • International mindset and ability to work constructively with varied cultures.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced in shipping today, particularly around compliance
  • Strong financial acumen with proven experience in managing marine budgets and delivering to plan, able to balance risk and cost to deliver positive outcomes
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • A high level of integrity and work ethics
  • A STCW-’95 or later Certificate of Competency in Marine Engineering for service in the Unlimited area and without any significant limitations
  • Hold an Bachelors Engineering Degree in mechanical, electrical or naval architecture
  • Highly skilled with technology and advance proficiency with Microsoft Suite
  • After hours flexibility, weekend and public holidays are essential.

This role will preferable be based in Auckland, New Zealand however we are open to candidates from Singapore working out of our Singapore office. You will have the right to live and work in New Zealand or Singapore at the time of applying. The successful candidate may be subject to undergo a Police Check and/or Pre-Employment Drug Test.
