Engender is a pioneering startup revolutionizing the dairy industry with a groundbreaking method of gender selection at the sperm stage. We're at a pivotal point, transitioning from academic research to commercialization, and we're seeking a passionate CNC Machinist - Intermediate to join our team!

In this role you will support the R&D team by operating CNC machining centres and manual machines such as Mill, Lathe, Surface Grinder etc. and to provide technical assistance, as required on projects within the R&D plan as Engender Technologies moves through the next stages of product development,  heading towards our commercialisation stage.  

Engenders machinist will actively participate in precision machining of existing components and/or fabrication of new components to support the development of cutting-edge instrumentation for microfluidic cell sorting. They will be responsible for:  

      • Fabrication, and production of key components for Engender’s sorting platform to specification;  
      • Responsible for some programming and setting up, running and maintenance of CNC mill;  
      • Contributing to the ongoing optimisation and improvement of Engenders microfabrication processes;  
      • Assembly drawing preparation for manufacturing including version control and documentation of the designs and fabrication methods for key components of Engender’s sperm sorting platform;  
      • Support analysis and presentation of results to the R&D team to inform progress and decision making;   
      • Actively participate in wider discussions that contribute to Engender’s fabrication techniques and sub-system design;  
      • Inspection and maintenance of machinery, performing routine machinery repairs within their expertise and capabilities;

Requirements

We're looking for some who: 

  • Ideally a qualified CNC Machinist with 3-5 years of relevant machining experience: New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Trade) (Level 4) with strands in Fitting and Machining, Machining and Toolmaking (or equivalent qualification).  
  • Can plan, sequence, and machine complex engineering components using manual and CNC machines to achieve a high degree of tolerance and finish, efficiently by using relevant machining technologies and techniques including the use of specialized tooling and measuring equipment, to meet required specifications.  
  • Is able to set up and operate a CNC machine centre unsupervised and reliably.  
  • Has experience with common, industry standard CNC controls such as (but not limited to) Mitsubishi, Fanuc and/or especially Haas or Arumatik (Kitamura). 
  • Has an understanding of ‘G’ code programming as posted by Cad/Cam software. 
  • Has experience with micromachining of common plastics (preferred)  
  • Has a basic to intermediate level experience using a common CAD/CAM software such as: Fusion 360(preferred)/ Solidworks/Gibbscam/Solidcam.  
  • Can read, generate and interpret mechanical design drawings.  
  • Is familiar with common machining tools (e.g. lathe, manual mill, surface grinder, bandsaw).  
  • Has a passion for R&D and design, developing new machining techniques and processes.  
  • Is an excellent communicator and willing to share knowledge to the greater R&D team.  
  • Continuously seeks to improve systems and procedures balancing efficiency with a quality and safety focus.  
  • Has a superb work ethic and time management skills.
