We are looking for an enthusiastic Trainee Traction Line Mechanics to join our Traction team. In this entry-level role, you will be trained to maintain, install, restore, and repair the overhead traction systems that power New Zealand’s rail network. This is an excellent opportunity to build a career with KiwiRail while receiving hands-on training and working with experienced professionals.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Under full supervision, carry out maintenance, repairs, installation, and restoration of overhead traction systems.
  • Inspect, identify, and maintain electrification safety signage.
  • Learn to use and maintain traction overhead test and measuring equipment.
  • Prepare to isolate and earth the overhead traction system under guidance.
  • Operate hand and power tools safely for electrical work.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of traction equipment and Hi-Rail vehicles.
  • Contribute to Toolbox Meetings and team decisions.
  • Maintain a strong customer service focus when interacting with clients, contractors, and the public.
  • Document work activities accurately and maintain proper filing.
  • Comply with KiwiRail’s operating safety rules and regulations.
  • Participate in on-the-job training to gain competencies required for the role.
  • Attend training courses provided by KiwiRail or external agencies as needed.

 

Skills and Experience Required

  • Basic understanding of electrical or mechanical systems is an advantage.
  • Strong willingness to learn and grow within the role.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and at heights.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • Commitment to health and safety in the workplace.
  • NCEA Level 1 or equivalent, current class 1 driver’s licence, first aid and CPR certificates.
  • Desirable to have a class 2 driver’s licence, forklift operating licence, EST A or B qualification.
